The events at the University of Virginia are not worthy of such a concise addendum, nor do I believe this is the last to be written on the topic.

For once I felt as part of the UVA community. I felt united with my Professors/ people of the university, and all against what I feel is representational of what is wrong with our capitalistic society. In a way I'm blaming the several politically rooted appointees to the Board of Visitors who had very different goals in mind when it came to what was best for the university. Goals that are undoubtably not compatible with what Jefferson had envisioned for his university.
Perhaps I'm waiting for intelligentsia to rule, or perhaps I'm just happy to attempt to keep the extremists of capitalism in their place. Lets face it, the pseudo-marxist rhetoric that several West Virginians buy up probably didn't help to shape my political compass as a child, but perhaps I'm beginning to understand that first and foremost= Extremism is bad. Extremists never win, the pendulum swings, and even if special interests win out for a month or so at UVA, eventually the consequences will present themselves, be they the issue of losing respected members of the faculty or the destruction of the Humanities at a school that has shifted its focus to business...Something's got to give.
Several issues have shaped and formed the university over the years. Sadly, as the fight to reinstate Sullivan continues, in this particular instance the students, faculty and community seem to be divided against their Board of Visitors.
AS I write this the Board of Visitors is still in the Rotunda meeting about the issue... more tomorrow. Hopefully it's good.
